I wanted to like this movie, and I did somewhat - but I don't see where all the rave reviews were coming from.
It's a decent story with some decent acting, but that's really it. A few years ago, this film would have been a great departure from the norm. It just seems to me like I've seen this movie before I guess.
Maybe it's people seeing Steve Carell in a semi-serious role.

I didn't like the movie very much, but was glad I hung in there until the very end. The payoff at the contest was almost worth all the crap it took to get there.
As for Steve Carrell in a semi-serious role, I don't think we were supposed to take him seriously or even semi-seriously. I mean his character was the leading authority on Proust for heaven's sake!

I really liked it. I thought it was cute and funny, yet sad and a tad disturbing. I never would have picked a movie with a title like that, so I'm really glad it came so highly recommended to us.

I enjoyed the movie buy I agree it was overrated. Alan Arkin was good but I didn't think Oscar award winning good.
I'm not interested in seeing anything with Steve Carell in it. The man is like a black hole of humor. He sucks the humor out of everything around him, and none of it ever escapes again.
He *might* be good in Evan Almighty. Maybe. I would not bet on it.

I agree, but only for the movies. His performances in 40 Year Old Virgin, Anchorman, and LMS were forgettable.
But in The Office, he does a great job.

Is that a sequel to Bruce Almighty?

Yes. Steve Carell was in Bruce Almighty if you recall, he'll be reprising the role.

Ugh. Bruce Almighty was amongst the more terrible movies I've seen. I can't believe they made a sequel.

I thought it was one of Jim Carrey's better roles, actually. It wasn't up to the level of The Truman Show mind you, but it was still better than anything he did pre-Truman Show.

You know, Otto, in a lot of ways you and I are very different people.
While I didn't hate The Truman Show, I've never had a desire to watch it again, and I like watching movies multiple times.
For my money, his best two movies were The Cable Guy and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Actually, just typing this now and thinking about Bruce Almighty I remembered the one time I laughed (hysterical, couldn't breathe type laughing). Steve Carell's deleted scene. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsPvD6EAUMo)

I like Jim Carey when he isn't being a total idiot. I like him in movies like Truman Show, Bruce Almighty, and Liar Liar.

I was pleasantly surprised with LMS. I watched it only because it was nominated for Oscars, before that it was below my radar.
