View Full Version : Is "Nextgen" overrated--or did Nintendo do it right?

So, I'm watching the XPlay reviews of the PS3 release and Wii release. I have to say, the PS3 stuff looks utterly bland. Maybe if I hooked one up to a 60" HDTV I'd change my mind, but so far the PS3 looks like it'll give me the same reaction as the XBox 360: Man, I've seen this before.

The Wii (heck, even the name is growing on me) seems to have done it right, and is catering to the majority of people that don't have super duper TVs and just want to have something fun and different. The Wii might be underpowered compared to the other two major consoles, but the games and the controller mechanics look fun. When money (and stock) allows, a Wii is *definately* coming into our house.

I personally think that Nintendo did the right thing when they chose what features to market. I'm still amazed at how well they targeted entire families with their one system. The reports over at TCF about sisters, aunts, and other friends enjoying playing the system are kind of surprising.

For me, I'm not into the high end gaming that even requires an Xbox 360. If they did come out with "pretty" games (like Animal Crossing or Zelda) for the Xbox 360, I'd consider getting that platform much more, but until then, I'm satisfied enough with the graphics I can get on the Wii for the functionality I'm getting (as well as that which I hope to get with its Internet connectivity).

From everything I've seen. The PS3 is underwhelming. Rushed, compromised, and poorly launched.

I'd been figuring I'd get a PS3 to go along with my 360, but now I'm in the market for a Wii. It will be a great kid and family game system and I can play my more "adult" FPS/RPG/etc. type games on the 360.

It will be interesting to see if Sony pulls it out. IIRC, the PS2 launched to less than stellar reviews as well.

Actually, the controller is the thing that I dislike the most about the Wii, and why I have not gotten one yet. I'm not yet convinced it's anything other than gimmicky crap. Oh, and "Wii" is still a stupid name.

Look, I'm a Nintendo fanboy from way back, but so far, other than Zelda calling to me, I don't see any reason to get the Wii. I'll probably end up holding off until the next Zelda game instead of buying now. I'll get the latest Zelda for my GameCube instead.
