My son is selling his Zune in order to upgrade his phone to one that has a keyboard (now that he has unlimited text messages) and he's fallen in love with the PPC-6700.

Just in case anyone here is looking to get rid of one, I thought I'd check.

I might...let me check.

The upgrade, the PPC-6800 is due out in a month or two. Not sure if that matters to you or not. Heck, it may end up making the 6700 cheaper if you buy it used.

The 6800 itself isn't that interesting, but the fact that it might lower the 6700 a bit is somewhat useful. In reading some of the various forums talking about it, there doesn't seem to be a big resounding interest in the 6800. The 6700 has been hacked to AKU (whatever that stands for) 3.5, while the 6800 is coming out with 3.3 (I think).

I know that my son won't be able to afford the 6800 new, and I also know that he won't be willing to wait to see if the market gets flooded with upgraders' phones.

I love the concept of the 6700, but I'm less fond of the execution. I've had mine for about a year and it's left me unwhelmed. I have not tried a hacked firmware on it, however. I have some friends that have, and they speak highly of it. I'm glad I didn't though, as the joystick on mine just quit working last week and I have to send it in to be replaced.

I've had a 6700 for about 6 months now, and my main beef is the shitty battery life. I drained it in a couple hours last week at a meeting where cellular coverage was blocked but wifi was available.
If activesync is on an aggressive schedule (sync items as they arrive), the device won't make it overnight on a charge.

I found using vibrate sparingly helped battery life, but not a lot. You're right, the battery life is frustratingly short.

Imagine the mind of a 14 year old kid being told about this (as I let him know about all the negatives I had read about the phone in my research): "The phone that you want, the PPC-6700 has a really short battery life. People have said that they need to charge it during the day to keep it working. It's got that really big screen with its backlight that can suck a lot of power. Are you sure you want this phone?"

"The phone you want causes your genitals to shrink and gives you zits. It also gives you bad body oder that repels all single and available people around you."

I wonder why not go for like an older Treo? Surely much less $$, just about as good for texting, and with the extended batteries, they'll go a long time..?

Of course, I know the teenage UMF all too well.

I adjusted your text appropriately.

That's just logical.

He claims that the Treo is big and bulky. It's nearly the same size as the 6700, but there you go.

I'm sure the fact that his dads have Treos is probably a turn-off. :)

I know logic on a Teenager is a tough sell, but maybe you can appeal to his financial side? It should be much cheaper. Plus- there are tons more cheap/free apps and games for the Treo. A co-worker has the 6700 and I have to admit that, if I have to abandon PalmOS when it's time for a new smart phone, it or a successor will likely be my choice. Though that same coworker has broken it once and and has lost his micro-SD card once when it ejected on it's own.. yikes.

Unfortunately, my employer is only rolling out the Motorola Q, Nokia E-series, and Samsung Blackjack for support for our mobile mail/mobile office access as the 650 EOLs so I guess I won't be getting a work supported device. I don't really care for any of those... :( Doesn't bode well that they're going more to the "smart-phone" end and further form the "PDA/Pocket PC" end of the market.

My son got lucky. His Zune sold yesterday, plus he managed to get the rest of the cash necessary, and we found a buy-it-now auction on eBay for a new 6700 for $249 (with no contract required).

One big advantage to getting a new one is that he can then sign up for their loss/damage protection plan, which may be very cost-effective for a fourteen year old.
