Without the web, Harriet Klausner would be just an ordinary human being with an extraordinary talent. Instead she is one of the world's most prolific and influential book reviewers. At 54, Klausner, a former librarian from Georgia, has posted more book reviews (http://www.amazon.com/gp/cdp/member-reviews/AFVQZQ8PW0L/ref=cm_tr_trl_mr_1/002-2443576-8811202) on Amazon.com than any other user?12,896, as of this writing, almost twice as many as her nearest competitor. That's a book a day for 35 years. Klausner isn't paid to do this. She's just, as she puts it, "a freaky kind of speed-reader." In elementary school, her teacher was shocked when Klausner handed in a 31?2-hour reading-comprehension test in less than an hour. Now she goes through four to six books a day. "It's incomprehensible to me that most people read only one book a week," she says. "I don't understand how anyone can read that slow."

...and she's "Person of the Year" in the same issue.
I didn't even see the text and realized that was a picture Time would have. There's some clever photographer at time who always takes photos like that. He may also freelance at USA Today.
"Oh, she's posted a lot of reviews at Amazon? I know, let's surround her in books!"
Meanwhile, some senile old coot in North Dakota is thinking "That poor woman is being crushed to death from reading so much!"

I've read a book before.
My wife reads 3 or 4 books a week. I think she has some catching up to do. :)

This woman doesn't just like to read -- she likes to write book reports. I hated the book report stuff when I was in school. Just let me go on to reading the next book, please!!
Who wants to write a review of every book they read???
I guess at least it helps her keep track of what she's read. If she finds one of her own reviews on a book, she knows she has read it. :D

So I wonder if she reads and processes all the words really quickly or if she skips many of the non-essential parts? To me if the book is any good at all there are no non-essential parts but I can imagine my brain being able to process 4-6 books worth of words each day.

Yes but for Yomiko is not just for fun. It is called Read or Die for a reason. :)

Nice to know my comment didn't go unnoticed! Seeing all those books piled around, my first thought jumped to ROD.
I've never really understood speed-readers like that woman. I don't see how they can enjoy books at that speed.

I'm a speed reader, depending on the type of book. For example, I can read a Stephen King book in about 4 hours, and enjoy it just fine.
I actually have a hard time slowing down as necessary when reading informational books where I need to remember specific information. Probably my ADHD has something to do with that.

That photo is taken by Ann States. She takes photos for Good Housekeeping, Fortune and Time.

I can read pretty fast, but no where near that speed... Most of the time though, I like to take my time with a book, read it over time to give me a chance to think about it... I'm in agreement with those who don't really get the point of reading a book that fast. Does she really remember that book after she's written her review?

Does she really remember that book after she's written her review?I read much more slowly than that (maybe a book every couple of weeks, with about an hour a day spent reading on the Metro), and i still can't remember half the books I read. Obviously the good ones stick in my mind, but others just... slip through the brain cells. :undecided:

I can remember every book I've ever read, and can tell you the basic plot line off the top of my head. Not as good as I used to be though.

Agreed... I read a lot of mass market paperbacks (Crichton, Cussler, Clancy, Patterson) and I can hardly remember the plots from one to another.
I can finish a Patterson in about 4 hours of straight reading. But I rarely have that much time all in one block... so 20 minutes here and there is what it takes to get a book read lately.

Hmmm, Wonder what would happen if you stuck a phone cord up her nose. Think you could use her as a Fax-Machine?
