View Full Version : T.V. News Oversight

I've come to a conclusion that anyone can turn on a T.V. and find a news program that reports news in such a way that it tells them what they want to hear.

I don't want to go into specifics, but as an example - Hard Right Christians can turn on CBN News/700 Club if it suits them - and feel they're getting unbiased news, for example. I'm sure there's stuff on the other end of the spectrum.

I've seen a couple of mentions of unacknowledged "errors" lately on the web. I believe one of the issues I'm thinking about was Fox News stating that Obama had never introduced a bill into the senate, when - in fact, he has co-sponsored over 100.

I'm not talking about libel or slander, just in the way that certain facts or mentioned or neglected or emphasized.

Would you rather live in a world where people are free to watch whatever kind of news they want, accuracy be damned - or would you rather live in a world where a non-partisan group could slap T.V. news on the wrist?

I, for world news, preferr BBC World news. For 'Network/Cable' news I try to steer clear from the Talking heads. If I want someone to tell me what I should think and how I should feel, I'll talk to my wife!

As do I. I think they are even offering a News 24 style satellite channel for U.S. audiences. Unfortunately, not many systems (nor satellite) has picked it up. I saw a piece on The Daily Show about Al Jazeera's English-language network. I don't understand why we're so afraid to have that available either.

I'd like to have as many news sources as possible, and I'd prefer not to judge any of them until I've seen it with my own eyes.

Ideally, I'd like a news channel that reports the facts, without interpreting those facts for you. But that's a pipe dream, I guess.

There's always C-SPAN.

Which, if I had to watch and process to get my news, would lead to me hitting the pipe or the bottle or something to make the pain go away.

I rely wholly on internet forums for my news. At then it's very obviously slanted. :)

I generally find them more balanced on political and world stories, but when the story turns to a topic where Brits and Yanks tend to differ, e.g. abortion/death penalty/hand gun control, their bias seems to come through.

I'd like to see where Al Jazeera's bias would be. If they reported on freedom fighters' rockets landing on imperialist Israeli towns, they'd be off the air here in no time.

There was a mention of the French starting a news network. [insert joke here]

Inserted my Joke in the FYP-Format. :)

I, for one can handle a little USA-Bashing. Gives a good 'feel' for how others perceive the actions of our People/Business & Government. Al Jazeera, BBC, etc. As long as it is speeked in Amerikan, I'd Good! :)
