WTF is up with Avian?

REH523 says his sister (who is having financial trouble) has a daughter who has entered a photograph that she took in online $1,000 scholarship competition.

Its takes 1,000 votes for the judges to actually look at the photo.

He asks if we would vote.

Avian points out that spam and advertising are banned on TCF and quotes the rules. Fair enough. But unixAdmin votes in the thread and Avian goes on complains about rules being different for some people so finally REH523 asks that the thread be pulled.

Avian snipes again before its actually pulled about it being a "sob story"

Also someone goes to the photo site and posts that someone on TCF is trying to get people to vote for the picture. It feels like Avian did it.

I've never really thought of him as a bad guy before....

Asking for a favor for my niece
She has entered a photo contest to try to get some scholarship money. Could I ask you to vote for her photo? It is really good. Thanks.... No need to register you can vote as a guest. link http://www.brickfish.com/Pages/Photo...7&pbvi=7060601 (http://www.brickfish.com/Pages/PhotosAlbums/PhotoView.aspx?picid=161432_98146111&pid=190195&scid=166&isep=1&pbapi=205707&pbvi=7060601)

Thank you for your time I was bragging to my sister about the power of TCF. She has 58 votes as of today......

Sounds like you're the one who's getting riled up, not Avian. It didn't seem like anything Avian posted was out of line to me. Inconsistent moderation is a real problem and he pointed it out. It's not like he personally attacked anyone. I have no idea if he posted the comment on the contest site, but neither do you.

For full disclosure, here's his post that you call a snipe:

Sob story aside, it's now clear that the rules only apply to some. That's all I needed to know :)

Seems to me most of his comments were directed at the mods/admins, not the OP. In fact, he said that he even voted for the OP's niece.

You don't think the OP asking that the thread be removed had anything to do with the fact that:

A) Some people in the thread said it was a violation of the contest rules to solicit votes like he was, and
2) Someone posted the TCF thread link on the contest's website, so maybe the contest officials would find out about said rule violation?

But unixAdmin votes in the thread

unixAdm started a similar thread for his own purposes that seems to have now been removed.

I was one of the people that misinterpreted Avian's post to mean that the OP was against the contest rules, not TCF rules. I suggested he have the thread deleted to avoid having her disqualified from the contest. That was an honest mistake. Avian later specifically said that he wasn't the guy who posted on the photo site. I have no reason not to believe him.

I do find those "vote for my friend/relative" threads obnoxious, but not so much that I'd sabotage an innocent kid's contest entry.

When I saw this thread, after having recently read the fireman thread, I thought that threads like that had been closed in the past as being against the TCF rules. I was surprised that Unixadm wasn't sending a consistent message from TCF management, so I was going to send him a PM when I saw that Avian had already posted in the thread making it superfluous.

And someone (Cat?) posted a link to a thread just like that, started by Ann. Her explanation then is that they allow it for regulars, they just don't want people signing up just to do it. In other words, they apply the rules as they see fit.

Personally, I see no harm in those threads, I can stay out of them if I want to.

You were the other person in that thread that irritated me.

The reason people thought it was a violation of the contest rules was that Avian's post made it sound that way.

But Avian (and you apparently) got what you seemed to want so you should be happy I suppose.

There are plenty of real things to complain about with complaining that regular members trying to help each other and their families get better treatemtn than traveling spammers.

I'm not entirely sure what I did in that thread to irritate you besides disagree with you.

Avian never said or implied (as far as I know) that the broken rule was a contest rule. In fact, once it was clear that some people were misinterpreting his post, he made it clear that he wasn't talking about the contest. I wish I still had the thread in my cache to re-read his original post that you think "made it sound that way", but it's already deleted from my cache apparently. If you (or anyone else) can find it, feel free to post it.

And I'm not sure what you think I wanted, but I didn't necessarily want his thread to be deleted. What I would like is consistent moderation. As I said in the thread on TCF, most of the rules are applied more harshly to HH regulars because they "should know better". Mods have also just completely made up rules in threads before. No leering, etc. It's hard to keep up with.

Yes, those "vote for my friend/family/self" threads annoy me. I think all it may result in is a hollow victory. Yay me, I won a contest because I asked a bunch of people to vote for me without considering other entries? It results in a popularity contest. But I don't complain to the contest or to TCF about it, and I don't vote for a competitor in spite, either.

There are plenty of real things to complain about than complaining about people speaking their mind about inconsistent moderation.

That site has links right on the contest so that you can created links back to vote for you.

The votes only make you eligible to get judged - they don't actually win the scholarship.

I get it, the contest endorses sharing entries (not necessarily your own, anybody can share anyone else's entry). Soliciting a bunch of people to vote without considering any other entries still turns it into a popularity contest, not a photography contest. And soliciting is not the same as sharing.

I get it, the prize received by the votes is not the grand prize. Understood. That doesn't make it right.

What's your point?

Again, those kinds of threads annoy me. That's it. So do threads with a redundant "Poll:" added to the beginning of it. I don't go around complaining whenever someone starts a thread that annoys me.

That what irritates me is people ragging on community members who ask for help.

I would have no problems with the rules at TC if they were
1) Spelled out explicitly (implicitly?)
2) enforced without regard to who might be breaking them

Since neither 1 nor 2 ever happen...

Me too. They usually don't play around with skirting around the rules/re-making a deleted thread. The mods also don't tend to care about semantics ("vote for my niece" thread vs. "vote for my friend's niece" thread, even though you left out that detail).

Edit: I spoke too soon, the thread isn't there anymore. No, I didn't report it.

I get it, the prize received by the votes is not the grand prize. Understood. That doesn't make it right. From what I can tell, it is merely a popularity contest. More to the point, it's an advertising campaign. It's not about art and they make no pretense of it being about art. There's nothing in the rules that says the photos are to be judged on any specific criteria. They're simply going to pick a winner. You are asked to vote for the photo you want to vote for, with no qualification. They want people to vote and vote often, and they want word of the contest spread far and wide. The post at TCF may violate some rule there; I have no opinion about that. But it was definitely in the spirit of the contest.

It came, although its funny since the previous thread was pulled (as far as we know) at the request of the OP. There has never been a rule, as far as I know, that my post violated. Probably someone looking for a little pay back.

Ah well, the whole dynamic over there is unhealthy and I participate voluntarily so if there is any culpa , its a mea cupla.
