View Full Version : How far away do you have your LCD monitor?

I was just wondering what distance you generally have the monitor from your eyes, and what size monitor you are using.
Mines been pretty close to my face, because I have these darned shelves on the wall above my desk, and its either have the desk pulled out from the wall, or have the monitor sitting so it ends up pretty close to my eyes.
I have a 17", and it was about 14" away...I just moved the desk out from the wall and moved the monitor back, so its more like 20" now..hoping the helps my eye strain.
I was toying with the idea of upgrading to a 19", probably a widescreen, but I'm having second thoughts because I doubt I could get it far enough away from my eyes with my current setup.
I'm about 30" away from both my 17" widescreen laptop monitor and my 20" Dell.

Once I finish getting my new Box @ Work set-up I'll take a measurement. Setting it up today I was maybe 2 feet away from the 2 19's we got me. MAN it is a LOT of Realestate to deal with! (up from a 17" CRT).
Sad thing is, it might mean that the new Computer/Monitor set-up MIGHT keep me at work moving furniture around one night, so I can get a bigger desk out to where I currently am.
Even, Sadder. I move desks to an 'Office' in the next month / month and a half. :)

I just measured - about 25 inches from the center of my 19" LCD. My vision is none too good, even with glasses.

Seeing as how this is in regards to an LCD monitor - I'm looking for a widescreen LCD that will allow me to play WoW.
I'm assuming that I'll need something with a faster than 8ms response time - I'd like the "Standard" 1680x1050 resolution as a minimum and would like to keep it as inexpensive as possible.
Anyone using something along those lines?

I picked up a Viewsonic VX2245wm at Costco yesterday for $399 which meets your requirements. It has received very good reviews. Unfortunately, it's TOO big for my computer desk so I have to return it and can't vouch for the unit personally. From what I've read elsewhere, it's a good deal.

Is there a "lesser" model without the ipod dock? I'd have no use for that at all...

Hmm, most of the stuff I'm seeing is 1440 x 900.

Yep, the VX2235 (http://www.viewsonic.com/products/desktopdisplays/lcddisplays/xseries/vx2235wm/), which my wife got me for Christmas.
WoW looks awesome in widescreen. There's SO much room for interface widgets. I run it in a 1440x900 window on the 1680x1050 desktop so I can IM/check thott/etc.
I used the modeline generator here (http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl) to add the 1680x1050 entry in my xorg.conf.

22" isn't even CLOSE to huge. To answer the original question, I sit between 3-4' from my 37" LCD. Closer to 3' when browsing the web or working intently on something, further back when watching videos or playing games. But playing Gears of War while sitting close enough that I can barely see anything EXCEPT the screen is absolutely incredible. :)
Previously I had a pair of 18"s and leaned forward to about 30".

I still have a 19" CRT but I rarely sit at my desk anymore
I've been toying with buying an LCD but I can't justify it because I do most of my work on my laptop in the living room.

Uh, I'm about hmmm 23" from my 22" WSLCD.
Did that answer the question? Oh, and it's an HP.
And it's favorite colour is white. And it likes long walks in the park. Moonlite sunbeams, and lime jello.

BTW, I was looking into 19" widescreen monitors....Is there any downsided to having widescreen, or that size of widescreen or anything? I notice a lot of games dont seem to support widescreen, and none of the ones a few years old.
Also, I can get the Samsung 931BW, which was the $129 best buy only special on BF, on ebay for like $230, here are the specs (http://www.samsung.com/Products/Monitor/LCD_Digital/LS19MEWSFXAA.asp?page=Specifications).
19" WS
Pitch 0.285*0.285mm
Cont Ratio DC 2000:1(Static 700:1)
Resp time: MagicSpeed? 2 ms (G to G)
Recc Res 1440x900
Input Analog RGB, DVI
Looks pretty good to me, but seems very cheap for what seems to be a really good monitor.
If I go over to newegg, theres like the Hanns:G (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824254005) for $180, or the Viewsonic (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116373) for $230, or a Samsung (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824001088) for $220, on sale for $179.
They first two have 5ms response time, the pixel pitch is a bit lower...the last one has 4ms...
Anyway, I'm not sure, is the Samsung a good deal, even at ebay price? Or, if I was getting a LCD, should I get one of the ones from newegg for about the same amount?
At home, I'm about 20" away from a 19" LCD. At work, I was about 20" (from a 19") but I just rearranged my desk situation and the monitor is farther away - probably about 30" or more and it's very hard to get used to.

I used to use an LCD but it gave me REALLY REALLY bad headaches. My eye doctor made me switch back to CRTs and I've had no problems since. I know that seems completely backwards, but there it is :)
I use a 22" and the rule of thumb is that your monitor should be arm's length away from you with your eyes lined up with the top of the monitor (or no lower than 75% up)

Wow. CRT's drove me nuts, I was extremely sensitive to flicker.
I'm about 3 feet away from a dell ultrasharp 19"
Unless I'm doing photoshop stuff in which case I'm closer.
