At the suggestion of someone here I'm been using RIP on TCF to ditch the ads and it worked flawlessly for months. Now I've nuked everything that needs nuking, but I still have a gap on the right. Any idea what's going on?

The whole reason I use RIP is for the screen real estate (my primary machine is a 12" laptop) so it's not enough that the ad's gone, I need my space back!

There's a div or other block holding the empty space on the right... highlight it and RIP it.

I couldn't find anything, that's why I included the screenshot.

Just right click in that blank area and select to RIP.

I think that's the same problem I had on TCF awhile back. I'm guessing you ripped each box on the right side separately? That usually leaves the right side of the page like it is in your screenshots. Try restoring TCF back to default and reripping the right side. This time you only need to rip it once. Not section by section. Try highlighting the entire right side including all the ads by right clicking and ripping below the very bottom box on the right side. This should get rid of the ads and reclaim that wasted space.

I solved this problem by paying TCF for a club membership.

As often as I disagree with their moderation or whatever, I have no issues with the idea that they might expect some sort of compensation for hosting and running the site -- whether it's in the form of a membership fee or ad revenue.

Just my two cents.

I did until they booted Jobeth. Actually even then I didn't quit, I just emailed to have my subscription not auto-renew since I wanted to think if over when it expired (I was halfway through a two-year membership) but instead they canceled it on the spot, making the decision for me.

I did the club just because there's no RIP for the iPhone.

Do you think that was just an error on their part, or were they deliberately booting you from the TCF club?

I hope they refunded your money. Otherwise, I'd be screaming bloody murder.

I think it was a misunderstanding. They did a pro-rated refund, so I didn't mind.

I'm having the same problem with that ad bar down the side on my netbook. I highlight the whole thing and have chosen rip it from this domain, website, similar pages - all to no avail. Any other hints?

I don't highlight it, just right click anywhere in that box area and see if it highlights it

Yeah, that's what I do. Right click in the area and the whole box gets highlighted. But none of the RIP options work.

Sounds like a bug with RIP. Try uninstalling and reinstalling both Adblock Plus and RIP. Then try it again.

When I updated to 3.5 I have to uninstall the whole thing and reinstall

I just installed them from scratch right before using them. Weird.

Do you have Adblock Plus installed? It's my understanding that RIP needs Adblock to remove frames.

Trent Bates

I'm puzzled by that concept. I "think" I'm doing the same with just Adblock Plus. I don't have RIP installed as I've always been able to block anything I've wanted with ABP.

How does my screenshot attached differ from what some of the rest of you see? (Except for Robin's screenshots. I see those but don't have an answer on how to do it in RIP.)

Most things for me don't require RIP any more. I use AdBlock Plus, and the AdBlock Plus Element Hider add-on.

FWIW - The magic entry for Adblock Plus that gets rid of the right advertising area is:

tivocommunity.com#TD(width=193)(valign=top)

It looks like I have a total of 4 entries for TCF to get rid of everything I don't want to see.

Other Firefox tips and tricks?

Is there anyway to change the CTRL settings? In IE, I've always been able to hit CTRL-S to submit a post. It's force of habit now. But in Firefox, that brings up a menu. Any way to change this?

And, I can't get Flash installed. On my netbook, I logged into some wireless hotspot that triggered an install in browser. But now I'm in India and can't get to that site with my laptop in my hotel room. When I try to download and install the Flash app in Firefox, nothing happens. When I go to Dailymotion, I don't see any of the videos.

So, I need to find another site that does the Flash install in browser. Any suggestions?

Does this work?

Thanks, but nope. That does like I described above - it downloads an installer.

When it worked on my netbook, it actually installed right in the web page. That seems to be the only way to make it work. I just need to find another site that does that.

Thanks, I'll keep trying. But apparently Adobe is either down right now, or blocked in India, as I can't reach it.
