Are Drudge Report 'headlines' at the time of this post.
It says something about my attitude to Idol that I thought DeGeneres' fans were screaming out "Noooooo... don't do it". :D
(turns out some Idol fans do not want a proper comedian on the judging panel)

She is mighty popular so I understand that... maybe I just don't know her background but I thought the judges needed to be somewhat in the industry.

Eh, I may be in the minority, but I really don't care who the Idol judges are or what they say. I watch for the singers' performances. As far as I'm concerned, the judges' comments are as much a waste of time as the insipid video interview intros to the performances.

With the exception of Neil Patrick Harris. I'm looking forward to his appearance. :)

I'm not an Idol fan, I'm exposed to it in the background while my wife watches it. I do really like Ellen and watch her show regularly. I don't think she's a good fit for Idol. I don't think she has the background to be a judge, and I don't think her schtick fits Idol. It reminds me of how I felt when I heard Drew Carey would be doing The Price Is Right. I like Drew, but that seemed like a bad fit.
Time will tell, I guess.

I watch Idol regularly, and I watch and enjoy Ellen's show whenever I'm doing cardio at the gym. I truly like Ellen and think she's funny and talented.
That being said, I agree with you that she's not a good fit for Idol, at least not if it's anything like the night she was a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance. She either made middle of the road, non-offensive, but useless pleasantries or she made jokes. The jokes were worth a chuckle, but I don't want to be clogging up the show with jokes. I want to hear sincere evaluations of the performance she's supposed to be judging.
It's just the wrong venue for her.

She's one of the few female comedians that I find funny, so she may be an interesting and worthwhile addition to the show. It's not like Paula gave tons of negative criticisms anyway, especially once they got to the later rounds.

I don't care anything about Idol but I might actually watch it just because Ellen is hilarious.

"I couldn't watch American Idol last night because I was busy working on American Idol last night," Ellen DeGeneres says on her talk show today. "As I mentioned, we're taping Hollywood Week, which starts airing Feb. 9, but we're taping right now so I already know who makes it to Hollywood. ... If you have a good bookie let me know."
Ellen said it was a "very late, late" night. "Usually I'm in bed by 9:00 p.m. Seriously. Or 9:15, if I'm feeling crazy. But last night we were there until today."
She also says she's finding it not easy to judge others. "It's tough. I'm bound to hurt people's feelings and I don't want to hurt people's feelings. I don't like that and I'm not that kind of person. Because they have a name for a person who likes to hurt people's feelings. It's called- Simon." >

I loved Mary J Blige as a judge last week. She would make an AWESOME permanent judge, though I doubt she'd want to do it anyway.

I don't watch the Price is Right very often, but he seems to be doing a good job. And he's keeping up Bob Barker's signoff asking people to make sure they get their pets spayed / neutered, which is pretty cool
Ellen's appearance as a guest judge on So You Think You Can Dance was a complete trainwreck. I pity the AI fans.
Theoretically you could have a non-industry person on the judging panel and have it work out -- you could have them represent the 'average viewer/listener' -- but I found it really jarring to go from judges' comments to Ellen's tone and back to the judges again.
On Dancing on Ice, they have non-skating performers who address performance-quality without talking about the skating technique, and it works quite well. It can be done, but you have to have the right person. Ellen isn't it. I like her on her own show, but I don't know WTF Simon and Nigel are thinking on this one.

The judges are there to a) fill in time and b) create drama and controversy. That's pretty much it, and they do it pretty well.
