View Full Version : Firefox 2.x and Alt-S

I'd been holding off on upgrading to Firefox 2.x because of a few minor annoyances I'd heard about it (including the History menu overriding the Alt-S shortcut to submit a post). A couple of days ago, my home laptop got hit with an auto-update to 2.x (I didn't think it would auto-update that large a version difference so I was a bit surprised). Anyway, is there an extension or hack to reclaim Alt-S from the history menu?

Just in case you didn't already know an alternative, but I'm pretty sure that 'TAB', then 'Spacebar' submits a post too under most/all circumstances.

Some places I visit it would be a few tabs and spacebar. I like that Alt-S was almost universal.

If you find something, please let me know Merc. That's a HUGE annoyance for me, and I'm not enjoying retraining my brain to do Alt-Shift-S.

It's enough that I might actually consider moving back to Internet Explorer!

Yes, I found this change annoying too. You can either use Shift-Alt+S to submit or you can change it back to how it was using about:config
Change:
ui.key.chromeAccess to 5
ui.key.contentAccess to 4

This will allow you to use Alt for webpage shortcuts and Shift-Alt for Firefox's menu shortcuts.

Yeah, thanks - I too noticed that the Tab, Spacebar thing didn't work in every forum...

If one does that, would one have to press <Alt>-<Shift>-F to get to the File menu, assuming there isn't an "F" shortcut on the current web page?

Considering I almost never short cut to the Firefox menus, I'm not too worried about that side effect.

Nope... just tried it. I made the about:config changes posted above, and ALT+F opens the File menu as expected. Apparently it's only if there are overlapping shortcuts that these settings determine what happens.

Finally got a chance to try this on my personal laptop... Will it work?
