PS3 Media Server - 01-06-2009, 02:46 PM

so one day i noticed my ps3 was showing my laptop via wmp 11....

now i have tried numerous times to get windows media center to see my laptop via the xbox 360 and it never would work...

anyway, i click on video, and amazingly a bunch of tv shows are there and i can't believe i have been dragging the laptop over by the tv and plugging it in via s video when this option is so convenient...

a week goes by, maybe two, and i am loving it...

so i go to a friends house and want to show him how cool this feature is...

well, i get a dnla error, google it and dick around with settings and crap for an hour or so...finally i see the videos but they play with a horrible lag...

i promise my friend that it is cool and that he should get his laptop working with his ps3...

last night i'm back home, it is kid week so after putting them to bed i'm just hanging on the couch and figure i'll finally watch the finale of heroes....

but oh no, i can't see my videos....dnla 501...crap...dick around with settings again, trying to remember what i may have changed when at my buddies house...

music isn't working either, nor photos...crap...this sucks...throw the controller...

turn everything off and try again...still no video, but now i have music and photos...

bottom line:

does anyone have a suggestion for getting the ps3 to talk to my laptop again....?

thanks...

I installed the Orb server a while back, for other reasons, and my friend who taps off my Wifi connection said that all my media showed up on his PS3 more or less immediately: http://www.orb.com

But in actual fact, any media server program with uPnP support should do the trick. Just make sure you didn't turn off uPnP anywhere, like in your router and such. Many people turn it off or block it because they think it's a security hole. It's not, they're wrong, and when it works, it rocks. There's lots of different server programs available for you to use: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UPnP_AV_MediaServers

FACT: Every year in the USA, swimming pools accidentally kill more people than guns.
